Ziggy, Ziggy, Ziggy. Where do i start? First of... Nah who am I kidding. This thing here is a masterpiece. Everything is colored just as it need's to be. The Shadow's, the lighting effects, everything. Also, I love how you made the sun reflect on Sonic's forehead. Now it's proved that Sonic dig's oil bath's. Shading is done great, and the overall sunrise effect gives the pic a peacefull, yet way past cool atmosphere. The only thing bugging me, is the mountain in the background since it looks just too... simple. But i guess we have to screw Spaz for that. (no offense Spaz!) Overall great Picture. keep up the good work man.
When I saw the original inks, I was both shocked and happy at the same time..now? Now this is a beautiful masterpiece! Patrick Spaziante's inks come to life in vivid color! The color choices are accurate and well shaded. The shading is stupendous and the epic range of colors brings out the three hedgehogs full of rainbow charmed charisma like the show once did. Th environment is colored to to a point where the viewer feels like he or she feels the impact in the characters' point of view. Nothing is wrong about this masterpiece at all and above all, a smashing and very dashing work of art that would certainly send Sonic, well, underground! An amazing piece, indeed!
For some reason, my computer is not let letting me write a critique so I'll do it in comment-form.
This is just fantastic! First of all I DO have a question regarding the comic -- another comment insinuated that this issue has not yet come out -- is that true? I hope it is as I started getting back into the Sonic comics with the Mega Man crossover (the last issues I have are before the 200th though I believe I might have picked the 200th issue up because of it being 200 haha -- obviously of the main Archie Sonic comic) but anyway -- I never got the Sonic Universe comics but for some reason, I've been super into Sonic again lately (to the point that I'm preparing to purchase all of the Sonic Archives in order to get ALL the issues in some form) and I would like to get this issue. Whew! Anyway, any info would be appreciated.
Now on to my critique that isn't an "official" critique:
I am in love with the coloring you did for this piece. Everything about it just makes Spaz' art pop. Beautiful. The shine in Sonia's hair, the light shining on Sonic's forehead, and the colors you chose are perfect for the triplets. The way you did the lighting really makes the shadows behind them make sense -- like there's this powerful light source shining toward them. I'm not sure if anyone else has picked up on this but I love the eye colors you chose -- each the color of a different sibling...
Sonic's Eyes: Green like Manic Sonia's Eyes: Blue like Sonic Manic's Eyes: Magenta/Pink like Sonia
That was really clever, using the already existing eye color of Sonic (green) in order to make a nice pattern with their eyes. I really appreciate small details like that. Such a great piece!
Was I the only one who commented on it? I hope not! It was genius!
I've been a Sonic fan my entire life even since I was like...2 and watched my family play Spinball. And then of course when I was 3 or 4 I got this cartridge that had Sonic 1 and 2 plus Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine haha good times. I need to get Sonic Underground and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog on DVD -- I have SatAM but I want the complete series but those only came out in Europe I guess.. in America I have to buy like...3 volumes for each of those. Ugh.
Anyway, the crossover's been good, least what I've read so far. Nothing amazing but not bad. I seriously can't wait for this issue though.
I think for the final issue they should have the "iverse" part of Universe covered up in graffiti that says "derground" so it says Sonic Underground. I think it's be pretty cool. I like when comics use the established logo and twist it up a tad.
I downloaded all of the episodes and honestly, I love Sonic Underground. I always wondered what would happen at the end of their journey, but I guess we'll find out in the near future because of the delay.
I'd love to see some lineart dropouts/color holds on some of the background elements to push the depth up a bit, as well as some more definition of how the light is landing on the BG.
Also some stronger contrast and shadows on the characters themselves. Note the really strong, large shadows being cast by the characters and the steps. When you sit down to color a piece it's very important to examine the inks - not just to know where your light source is coming from (which you nailed - they are being uplit) but also the intensity of that light source.
Really love the sunset-y atmosphere though - very fitting for the mood of the piece being that this story is the "epilogue" of the Sonic Underground cartoon. And great texture. Keep it up!
the sky with stars so bright, the colors feel so right- ...OH, just wrap it in gold foil and send it to the Archie Comics office already, will ya? Seriously, this deserves SOME kind of tribute! I mean, it looks good enough to be the ACTUAL cover of the frickin' issue!!! Why not?! I am your apprentice. Teach me your ways, Oh Wizard of Color
